Fear And Loathing In La Jolla

Fear and Loathing In La Jolla

It’s 11.43 on the first day of 2011.

The shocker of a day where New Years resolutions, goals and major decisions are made and often stuffed up before they start.

Let me throw something out.

Make 2011 the year you make the switch from Consumption to Creation.

Man, I’m in love with the phrase.

It’s a deviation of something I saw Darren Rowse (Problogger) tweet on New Years eve.

It’s perfect.

Simple Terrifying Crucial

So in effort not to be a super hypocrite on day 1 of the year here I am squeezing in some creation before we hit day 2 of the new decade. (I’m not sure if that’s today or last year but I’ll leave that to wikiwonks to debate)

Notice I’m saying consumption to creation.

I’m not saying don’t consume – without fuel for your brain, you’re not going anywhere. I’m not saying, stop watching television. Who am I to deny you the real housewives of Atlanta!

No I’m saying, add creation into the mix. Do some creation, every day if you can.

Here’s the exciting thing – it’s amazing how little you need to do to create a massive difference….

The Four Hour Body and Internet Marketing.

  1. Awesome book
  2. I’m Undertaking this process
  3. The Chapter on what people need to do to change is GOLD
  4. OUTSTANDING book launch – one that will be studied for years to come
  5. Buy the actual book (I’m totally digital and I even listened to this on audio – but the physical book is BEAUTIFULLY laid out – This one is going straight onto the Hall of fame bookshelf in my office.

That’s not why I bring it up now.

It’s to do with MED.

Minimum Effective Dose…

I’m not going into MED here – but I KNOW MED for you to become a market leader in your niche in 2011 is way less than you imagine.

Remember – Market Leadership = Content * Consistency

I’m aiming for 30 minutes a day of creation every working day this year. (editing this thirty days later – i’ve missed days, but every day is a chance to start the streak again)

I’m willing to bet the MED for market leadership could be as little as ten minutes a day of focused creation – think the free writing exercises we did in the challenge this year.

Tim in the 4 hour body talks about an experiment where subjects had to take a photo of every thing they ate during the day. That’s it – nothing more.

The result was pretty amazing – people are more than three times more likely to lose weight when they take a photo of what they eat.

Now there’s a whole book in “What get’s measured gets managed”

The point is, the simple act of taking a picture of everything you eat and drink creates a change.

(In quantum physics we know the mere act of observation changes the state of the observed object)

I started this process today and almost forgot just to take a photo – (Note to self – LAY OFF THE COFFEE)

For change to stick it needs to be simple. So even if your content creation is taking a photo of something interesting to your market and posting it to your facebook page – you’re on the way.

Don’t go overboard, keep it simple, start super small and get your creation streak going.

Put simply, if you don’t create, don’t publish, Don’t ship –you’re stuffed.

The awesome news is it’s never been easier to create and ship

It’s now gone midnight, more creating tomorrow.

Ed

PS: But before I go to bed – one crucial thing – Creating must involve publishing, real artists ship. Being creative is a verb, it requires you doing something and DELIVERING it to your market. Sitting there and having mighty thoughts and massive mindmaps and Hemmingway worthy journals mean Jack if nobody ever sees any of it!!!!

PPS: Google just announced a major algorithm change which will boost original content at the expense of copiers, paraphrasers and retweeters.
